The GW5 series is widely used in 35kV–110kV class substations, covering voltage ratings such as 33kV and 40.5kV.

It adopts a three single-phase V-type structure, where each phase is arranged at an angle (typically ~50°) to improve insulation and mechanical stability.

It is mainly used to:

• isolate energized high-voltage equipment during maintenance
• provide a visible air-gap disconnection point
• switch no-load lines and busbars
• support safe sectionalizing of substations

The switch can also be used for switching small capacitive or inductive currents under no-load conditions.
